Theme ~ Water

Chosen by Lew.

Water, water everywhere...!  I have lots of water images, so the hard part this week was which ones to choose to showcase for you all.  :)

I start with my header image, uncropped, here below.  I took this at The Morton Arboretum this year while there was still snow on the ground.  I was standing on the bridge at the end of Lake Marmo, where there was a drainage ditch.  Looking down, I realized how much like a mushroom the scene looked through the lens, so I had a little fun with my camera and ended up with this shot, looking over the railing straight down.

The below shot is more recent, taken at Shabbona Lake about an hour west of home on Father's Day.

I almost deleted the below image while it was still in my camera.  I had my macro lens on my camera that day, and I brought no other lens--one of those "put one lens on and go out" afternoons.  Fernando and I walked one of the trails and ended up looking out at a swamp/wetland area, filled with croaking frogs and still water.  I shot this scene almost offhandedly, looked at the back of my screen, and almost hit the "trashcan" button.  I decided to wait, though, and I'm glad I did.  I keep coming back to this image--there's just something about it, almost like a watercolor, or an Impressionist painting.  It has become one of my favorite images, and I really need to get it printed and hung on a wall in my home.

Here's a fun water shot, with the guys accepting a water bucket challenge (last year's rage).

Going macro on the water theme, I love heading out to the garden to capture the individual water droplets.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Speaking of macro, that's next week's theme, and I just took some pictures that should fit the bill nicely.  See y'all soon!!

Theme ~ Summer is Here!

Chosen by me.

June 22 marked the first day of summer, so we know, calendar-wise, that summer is here!  Here are all the ways I love that summer is finally here...

My header image, uncropped:  Diving right in to summer!

Summer is here in all these ways:

Water sports on  Lake Bonaparte...

Ball games...

Fireworks...

Summer flowers...

And harvests from the garden...

Canning adventures...

And food on the grill...

Farmers market...

And festivals for fun...

And finally, sunsets on the lake.

Summer is here!!

Weekly Header Challenge -- Children's Toys

Theme ~ Children's Toys

Chosen by Mac.

This was probably the hardest theme for me, since my boys are grown and I don't have children's toys around the house.  Plus, I went digital only six years ago, so I don't have digital images of earlier years when they had lots of toys (and I had no time to scan or take pictures of pictures!).  I had to search for quite a while before finding these images I'm sharing with you today.  Here is my header image, uncropped:

It's a little blurry, since my camera was still pretty new to me at that point.  I had the ISO at 500, which put the shutter speed at 1/20 second.  I'd definitely take this shot differently today!  Anyway, we were at a Cracker Barrel at Christmas time, and since those restaurants feature stone fireplaces and they had this one decked out in Christmas decor, I tried to take a picture.  I love the vintage metal truck!

Here are a few more toys I dug up out of the archives.

Boys will make guns with anything, and this is one made of K'nex:

A few toys, all lined up and ready for wrapping.  This particular Christmas, we chose two families for my dad's church's Angel Tree program, and we bought gifts for their children.

Below, a Teddy bear perches on a sleeping Fernando's shoulder.  This should've been my header image, but I only just found it!

That's it.  I really have to go back into my archives and keyword my older images; it would've made this week's assignment so much easier!  I'm sure I'll find some more images of toys tomorrow, as Murphy's Law goes.

Can't wait to see your images today!

Weekly Header Challenge -- Recent Images

Theme ~ Recent Images

Chosen by all of us.

I frequently take pictures as the weather warms, so this week's theme is an easy one for me!  Let's begin with my double rainbow, which I actually anticipated (usually I'm clueless).  Storms had headed off to the east on this particular evening, and I guessed that with the late evening sun, there would be a rainbow.  I was pleasantly surprised that there were two, and the most complete I'd ever seen.  Living in the suburbs means that rainbows will be cut off by houses, buildings and trees.  But this one was pretty amazing.

I discovered a new recipe:  skillet cake.  Made right in my cast iron skillet, this is a super moist cake with a not-too-sweet frosting.  I've actually made it three times since my first attempt!

Our state homeschool conference was held last week, and I coordinate the struggling learners portion of it.  I invited Melinda Boring (great last name, huh?), who is anything but, to come speak to parents who are homeschooling their struggling learners and special needs kids.  Here is her most popular workshop, packed to the gills and overflowing into the hallway.

Meanwhile, back at home, Danny was dog-sitting for the director of the health clinic at which he volunteers.  Meet Daisy, a sweet and slightly goofy (and fat!) yellow lab.

My garden is coming along nicely; here are the green beans I planted, albeit later than I wanted.

We had 1/4" hail a few days ago, and I snapped this shot from the patio doorway.

I'll leave you with something sweet--not like my chocolate cake, though!  Naturally sweet strawberries, coming in like gangbusters in my overflowing strawberry patch.  We've picked three gallons so far, and short of eating them all, I may make strawberry preserves.

Happy week to you all, and see you soon!
